Dr. Chawla has been associated with NCDC (National Centre for Disease Control-Formerly NICD), Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India as an Additional Director & Head, Department of Epidemiology and Parasitic Diseases for more than 20 years to develop the public healthcare systems.

She worked with WHO Collaborative Centre for Epidemiology and Trainings which was both rewarding and valuable. During her tenure at NCDC, she had many opportunities to participate in qualitative and quantitative research and to develop skills that will be valuable in a policy research position, including study design, survey development, data collection and analysis, literature reviews, and drafting policy briefs etc.

About Dr. Uma Chawla

Dr Uma Chawla has over 25 years’ experience in healthcare & life sciences spanning across the different areas such as capacity building, epidemiology, disease surveillance, prevention and control of disease outbreaks, including 15 years at the National Centre for Disease Control as Additional Director and Head, Centre for Epidemiology and Parasitic Diseases; Co-Director of WHO Collaborative Centre for Epidemiology and Training.

In this capacity, she had travelled extensively throughout India and other overseas countries to conduct field evaluation and epidemiological surveys, including assessment of National Health Programs. At National level investigated over 40 outbreaks of communicable, non-communicable, and vaccine-preventable diseases and AEFI (Adverse Effects Following Immunization) & have coordinated and lead National Rapid Response Investigating Teams for natural disasters like floods, earthquake, tsunami, etc. throughout the country.

Dr Chawla has significant experience in capacity building for health professionals and service providers in the context of epidemiology and disease control & other National Health Programs. I am a national trainer for programs such as the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI), Strengthening of Routine Immunization Program, Child Survival and Safe Motherhood, and Reproductive and Child Health and have developed several training modules for the Universal Immunization Program, EPI, Field Epidemiology Training Program, and Epidemic Preparedness, Prevention and Response and RCH program.
